Brainspotting trauma therapy treats Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma. Trauma can result from harassment, neglect, violence, abuse, combat, accidents, medical treatment, disasters, etc. For more information on trauma, see my trauma therapy page.
Brainspotting Trauma Therapy Can Help You Heal
Brainspotting therapy can help decrease the symptoms of trauma, PTSD, depression, stress, fear, anxiety, anger, rage, panic, phobias, and addiction. It can be used with medical conditions, including fibromyalgia, chronic pain, fatigue, strokes, headaches, sports performance, and the surgery.
Dr. David Grand discovered Brainspotting while performing a modified version of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). He discovered “points in the client’s visual field that help to access unprocessed trauma in the subcortical brain.” Dr. Grand states that “Brainspotting taps into the body’s natural self scanning and self healing abilities”. Bilateral music is used with the Brainspotting technique to activate each hemisphere of the brain. Brainspotting helps the client work through and release trauma trapped in the body. This approach bypasses the conscious, thinking part of the brain, to “access the deeper, subcortical emotional and body-based parts of the brain.”
The Client’s Brainspotting Experience
Brainspotting also employs calming techniques, which allow clients to process the trauma without having to re-experience the trauma at the intensity of original event. Brainspotting calm’s the nervous system by releasing the trauma without overwhelming the client.
As part of the healing process, the Brainspotting therapist uses dual attunement to provide connection and a safe, compassionate, healing presence for the client. The therapist provides the client guidance in the Brainspotting process. However, dual attunement, allows the client’s brain and psyche to lead the way to healing. The Brainspotting clinician’s aim is to be the “tail of the comet”, allowing the clients innate ability to heal themselves to chart the course. This allows the client to set the pace in the healing process, which allows the client to avoid becoming overwhelmed.
Brainspotting Trauma Therapy Results
A recent study shows that Brainspotting appears to be as effective as EMDR for treating PTSD.
A community survey of survivors and community members after the Sandy Hook shooting, showed that Brainspotting was very effective as one of the top therapeutic techniques used to treat trauma resulting from that event.
